Lepo
Sumera (8.05.1950 - 2.06.2000) was a professor
at the Estonian Music Academy where he studied composition under Prof.
Heino Eller (1887 - 1970). He is a versatile composer, whose various stylistic
periods have one thing in common: a subtle treatment of rhythm and an independent
dramaturgy of timbres. Sumera is one of the most important symphonic composers
in Estonian music. He has close ties to electronic and chamber music beyond
his interest in the symphonic orchestra. His works have been performed
on all continents.

Sumera est l'un des symphonistes les plus importants de toute la musique estonienne. Outre pour l'orchestre symphonique, il écrit beaucoup de musique électronique et de musique de chambre. Ses oeuvres ont été jouées dans le monde entier.

Sumera's music has all the ingredients that assure success in the late twentieth century: 1) his music has a "spiritual" veneer: it is often meditative and incantory-sounding, which will be interpreted as evidence of great insight and religiosity by many listeners who are attracted to CDs of Gregorian chant and music by Górecki, Pärt and others; 2) Sumera's music often employs the natural repetition technique of archaic Estonian "runo" song, and this accidental coincidence to minimalism will endear him to those who are still impressed by minimalism and and something "different" and "revolutionary"; 3) Sumera's music is organized more through simple alternation of contrasting elements than throug contrapuntal activity or the dynamic developement of melody, and this will be attractive to the more casual listener of classical music...

A critic for a Russian msuic magazine noted that Sumera's music "has an imagery that evokes associations with many phenomena of Estonian art - for instance, lyrical landscapes and fine pictures of nature and poetry.
Sumera's music builds, however, from simple, peaceful initial ideas into episodes of great contrasts, and thoughts of Glass et al. are put to rest.
Delicate without being weak, strong without being pseudo-profound, the thirty-minute First Symphony is an individual voice.
This is not , thankfully, the last we'll hear of Lepo Sumera: Recommended.

What is happening in Estonia? Here is yet another fine composer, Lepo Sumera, whose first three symphonies share some of the rapt mystical qualities...
These are colorful, tense, moving works...
There is nothing more exciting than contemporary scores that seem totally original yet tap into some deep, communal musical experience. Why doesn't the San Francisco Symphony explore these elegant, user-friendly pieces?

„Stadtmagazin Kiel" 1.02.-28.02.1995
I have always enjoyed the first two symphonies and now add my administration for the Symphony 3, different in approach, more romantic in nature, but also with an individual touch. Sumera's symphonies shine especially in their verypersonal, imaginative orchestration.

What I like about it is ist often long-arched melodies, ist very original and personal sound combinations, and ist drive and urgency.

Drei Sinfonien des Esten bildet ein markantes Porträt...

Sumera's success has been primarily as a composer of large-form pieces. His First Symphony (1981) display unusual formal constructions.

As far as I'm concerned, Sumera is two for two with this disc (BIS CD-690) and I seriously recommend this to anyone interested in contemporary classical music.

...like the best Nordic composers his music can take you on strange and rewarding exploratory journeys through your own mind.
